Nurses

Mrs Mairead Bates RGN

Mrs Val Ellis RGN

Mrs Vanessa Harrison RGN

Mrs Julie McDowall RGN

Our experienced practice nurses offer general nursing services including immunisation, travel advice, family planning, smoking cessation advice, cervical smears and assistance to our GPs who perform minor operations. Our nurses run independent surgeries for minor illnesses including sore throats, colds and flu, fever, earache, sinusitis, coughs, headaches, nose bleeds, hayfever, contraception, diarrhoea and vomiting, bites and rashes.

There is emphasis on chronic disease management and our nurses are skilled in diabetes, asthma and COPD. Our practice nurses are supported by our Health Care Assistants, Alison Richardson and Jade McConnachie, who are available to undertake procedures such as blood pressure checks, some injections,  urine analysis, ECGs and new patient checks, They, and our Phlebotomist, Lou Young, also take blood samples for essential blood tests.

District Nurses and Community Matrons

Our local team of district nurses are responsible for the assessment of nursing needs and delivery of nursing care in the home to all age groups. To contact them, telephone 01799 562937.

Emergency Care Practitioner / Paramedic

Vicky Bryning (f)

With other GP surgeries in north-west Essex and Uttlesford Health Ltd, Gold Street Surgery has an Emergency Care Practitioner who carries out some home visits. An Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP) is a fully trained Paramedic who has also undertaken specific additional training to extend their clinical skills. Using an ECP, working closely with surgery GPs, means that more home visits can carried out, earlier in the day, leading to earlier treatment or referral to hospital or other health services where needed. The ECP project is being funded by West Essex Clinical Commissioning Group

Dispensers

Direct dial number 01799 582623

Carrie Richardson and Sarah Cracknell administer our repeat prescription service and dispense medication to eligible patients. Please note that, for safety reasons, we cannot accept requests for medication over the phone.

Secretaries

Direct dial number 01799 582622

Our secretaries Sylvia Griffin, Beth Macarthy-Meader, and Zoie Mathie in addition to their traditional secretarial duties, are available to help answer queries about hospital referrals including the Electronic Referral Service (Choose and Book - go to www.chooseandbook.nhs.uk). They are assisted by specialist staff who administer the completion of medical reports, claim forms etc (please note that most medical reports for insurance, mortgages, specialist licences and so on are not part of the NHS service and therefore have to be fitted in around the main, NHS, work of the surgery).

Receptionists

We have a team of receptionists trained to assist by directing patients to the most appropriate healthcare professional, either within the surgery or outside. This may include community pharmacists, physiotherapists, nurses or nurse practitioners, emergency care practitioners and others instead of a GP. They have received special training to cope with their demanding role, and are subject to the same strict rules regarding patient confidentiality as our clinical staff.

While they still also deal with the traditional activities of making appointments, handling general enquiries, message taking, giving of pathology results and arranging transport, their role and responsibilities are now much wider and you can speak to them in complete confidence. When they ask why you would like an appointment, they aren't being nosy - they are trying to help you by putting you in touch with the professional best suited to your needs.

GP Registrars, Trainees and Students

Our practice is a training practice. Our Registrars (trainees) are fully qualified doctors and already have a great deal of hospital experience, but are learning the specialised additional skills required to practice as an independent GP. They are attached to a nominated trainer. The approved GP Trainer at Gold Street is Dr Richard Boyce, although most of our GPs assist with training or tutorials. Training practices and training GPs have to meet and maintain compliance with approved national criteria.

We also regulalrly have medical students from Cambridge University Medical School and other universities attached to our practice for short periods. If you do not wish to have a student present during your consultation, please inform the reception staff prior to seeing the doctor.

Medical Audit and national studies

We regularly run audits on, for example, disease management and infection control. The surgery also takes part in national studies monitoring chronic illnesses such as diabetes. We share some data anonymously about patient populations with colleagues in organisations such as NHS England and Public Health England, which helps inform national decisions about health and the NHS. Please let us know via reception if you prefer to opt out of such studies.

Extended Primary Healthcare Team and Primary Care Network

Our local primary healthcare team includes a dietitian, health visitor, clinical pharmacists, physiotherapist, midwives and nurses who specialise in respiratory medicine, dementia and Parkinson's disease. Increasingly, we are working with our neighbour GP surgeries in Saffron Walden, Newport and Thaxted to provide additional healthcare professionals in mental health, pharmacy, health and well being across the locality.
